First meeting will be with the Indonesian ambassador, Edi Yusup

This year, Fundação Getulio Vargas' International Intelligence Unit (FGV IIU) will promote a series of debates on Asian countries around China, called Focus on Asia. The web series, which will feature the participation of ambassadors, diplomats and scholars from the region, begins on February 25th, with the Indonesian ambassador, Edi Yusup. The objective of the events will be to expand knowledge about these lesser-known but strategic economies on the continent; identify exchange routes and cultural and economic flows; and foster partnerships between Brazilian and Asian companies.

The international and national contexts will be on the agenda in the debates, in light of recent facts. Possible changes in North American foreign policy, the question of the return or not of multilateralism, changes in Europe and Asia itself are some of the aspects to be considered in the discussions. The large and unprecedented trade agreement recently signed between 15 countries in the region - with the creation of the bloc called Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) - will significantly reduce tariffs between them, in addition to strengthening the region's production chains. It is the first trade agreement to bring together China, Japan and South Korea, a topic that will also permeate discussions in the webinars.

Other countries to be chosen for webinar topics include Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore, Japan, India, South Korea, Pakistan, Australia and New Zealand. IIU will also promote, within the series of meetings, thematic webinars in which the following will be discussed: "Asia as a consumer market and opportunities for Brazil"; "The technological war between China and the USA: impacts on the West"; "100 days of the Biden administration - Relations between the "new USA" and non-Chinese Asia"; and "The US, China and Middle Powers, and the Future of International Organizations."
