“Análise da Matriz Energética e da Promoção da Energia Renovável no Setor Elétrico Brasileiro”

FGV IIU, with the support of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation (KAS), developed a comparative survey on Brazil and Germany, and their respective renewable energy sectors. This research generated an initial report, which was developed into another document, entitled: “Análise da Matriz Energética e da Promoção da Energia Renovável no Setor Elétrico Brasileiro”.

Highlighting the need to act in the face of climate change, especially the transition from fossil fuels to renewable sources, Professor Renato Flôres, director of the IIU, and Ruderico Pimentel, former analyst of the IIU, studied the paths that Brazil takes to achieve a greater degree of transition, comparing it with Germany and its efforts, namely the Energiewende.

Challenges are also highlighted, with Germany suffering from a shortage in its domestic distribution infrastructure, and the high costs of a mass transition. In Brazil, on the other hand, there is a difficulty in expanding the hydroelectric system, being gradually more distant, expensive and questioned for their impacts.

The study emphasized the concept of the Social Market Economy, understanding the role of the State in energy markets, the impacts that can be caused to those who trade and consume energy, as well as the focus on economic, social and environmental sustainability.
