Atlantic Future: Towards an Atlantic area? Mapping trends, perspectives and inter-regional dynamics between Europe, Africa and the Americas
The Atlantic Future project had FGV IIU as an active member and was coordinated by the Center for International Information and Documentation in Barcelona (CIDOB). It aimed to analyze fundamental trends in the Atlantic Basin, as well as how changes have transformed the space in recent years. decades. The initiative received funding from the European Union under the 7th Framework Programme.
The Project was done in partnership with 12 other institutions, namely: the Centro for International Information and Documentation in Barcelona (CIDOB), as its coordinator, the Aberystwyth University (AU) the Centro de Investigacion Y Docenia Economicas AC (CIDE), o Ecologic Institut gemeinenützige GmbH (ECOLOGIC), the Fundacion para las Relaciones Inter Nacionales y El Dialogo Exterior (FRIDE), o HEM, the Instituto Português de Relações Internacionais (IPRI) from the New University of Lisbon, the Istituto Affari Internazionali (IAI), the Transatlantic Foundation (TF), the Bath University, the University of Pretoria (UP), and the Johns Hopkins University (JHU).
Through the course of three years, a research was developed, going through the context of the Atlantic region - especially the Americas and Africa - with topics such as economy and finance, security, institutions, resources and the environment, detailing perspectives with possible scenarios and outcomes, as well as studying the weight the theme brings to the European Union’s foreign policy.
Paired with a series of workshops and seminars, FGV produced a paper titled "Sustainable Policy Perceptions in the Atlantic Basin: Green Policy Index” by IIU’s analyst Marina Drummond, which tries to shed light on the degree in which sustainability and environmental policies are accepted, and the possibility of their implementation in the Atlantic basin.
