Blockchain Contributions for the Climate Finance

Resulting from the partnership between Fundação Getulio Vargas’ International Intelligence Unit (FGV IIU) and the Konrad Adenauer Foundation (KAS), the project had the objective of studying a possible relationship between measures to combat climate change and Blockchain technology. Leonardo Paz Neves, analyst at IIU, and Gabriel Aleixo Prata, developed a report detailing how the use of the new technology would be able to make climate finance safer, more transparent and more efficient, in addition to decentralizing the process and maintaining a greater amount of reliable data for the verification of progress and accountability.

The report showed the current need to implement the tool, its difficulties and potential risks. In addition, adaptations and changes were recommended in "critical areas" so that the ideas argued become a concrete and effective policy, namely: "the importance of bridging the institutional gap of countries and civil society; how to increase the importance of civil society; cultivate new solutions; and strengthen the political debate", all this with the aim of creating regulations capable of fostering such innovation.

In addition to the report, a workshop was held on March 20, 2018, presenting the idea, defending it, and refining it afterwards. The workshop was supported by KAS and the Brazilian Institute of Technology & Society (ITS). The event was organized by Christian Hübner and Karina Marzano from KAS, Gabriel Aleixo from ITS, and professors Leonardo Paz Neves and Renato Flôres from The IIU.
